wire gage [′wīr ‚gāj]
(design engineering)
A gage for measuring the diameter of wire or thickness of sheet metal.
A standard series of sizes arbitrarily indicated by numbers, to which the diameter of wire or the thickness of sheet metal is usually made, and which is used in describing the size or thickness.

One way to alleviate the heat is to use larger diameter wires -- for example, use 12 gage instead of 14 gage, or 10 gage instead of 12 gage (larger wires have smaller American Wire Gage numbers).
