[FIGURE 10 OMITTED] According to the previous work, (12) anomalous code-position behavior is attributed to the formation of zinc hydroxide film on the cathode surface due to hydrogen reduction, which suppresses the discharge of nickel and iron ions in the deposition of Zn-Ni and Zn-Fe alloys.
The wet-dry cycles allow the pure zinc to develop its patina of zinc corrosion products--zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide and zinc carbonate--which form sequentially over time.
Zn additions must be made with care because they may inadvertently induce substrate passivation that suppresses HT coating formation by inducing the precipitation of nonprotective zinc hydroxides or by increasing the equilibrium reversible potential for Zn oxidation such that Zn dissolution is inhibited.
