Zoochlorella
the general name for various, mostly unicellular, green algae (primarily from the genera Chlorella, Carteria, andPleurococciis) that live in the bodies of various invertebrates (including infusoria, sponges, and coelenterates). Zoochlorella live in symbiosis with their hosts: the hosts need the carbohydrates made by the zoochlorella during photosynthesis, and the zoochlorella use the animal’s nitrogen substances and the carbon dioxide it gives off.
