Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV).
The Herpes Zoster viruses, which are similar to the Chicken Pox viruses, can spread from the skin of the face to certain nerves, causing small inflamed spots that can cause severe pain.
The condition, which produces painful blisters, is caused by the chickenpox virus, herpes zoster.
