adaptive headlights

An automotive safety feature that adjusts the headlights based on traffic or road conditions. Adaptive headlights change their angle when the car is turning the corner. On a dark road at night, this can be a life saver. Self-leveling headlights that tilt up or down is another adaptive feature. For example, standard headlights will momentarily shine toward the sky when the car is riding over a large bump in the road. With auto-leveling, they will tilt down toward the road.

Adaptive On/Off
For drivers who forget to turn their lights on, many vehicles today have headlights that turn on automatically at dusk. They may also switch to high beam when no oncoming cars are detected and switch back to low beam when necessary. However, such systems can be fooled by lights on lamp posts or buildings and automatically dim when a human driver would keep them on high beam.

Adaptive Brake Lights Are Expected
In the future, in order to alert the cars behind, the rear lights on a vehicle will signal how the brakes are applied. Adaptive brake lights are expected to shine in levels of brightness in relation to how hard the driver is braking (see collision mitigation system). See automotive safety systems.
