Aleksandr Aleksandrov

Aleksandrov, Aleksandr Danilovich

Born July 22 (Aug. 4), 1912, in the village of Volyn’, Riazan’ Province. Soviet mathematician. He became an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR) in 1964; he was a corresponding member from 1946. Member of the CPSU since 1951. Graduated from Leningrad University in 1933, worked there, and was its rector during 1952–64. He has been at the Siberian Division of the AN SSSR since 1964.

Aleksandrov’s main scientific contributions are in geometry. He discovered methods for studying the metric properties of figures, which opened a new field of research, the so-called irregular metric multiformities, which are more general than Riemannian space. These methods greatly broadened the field of geometry. The work of Alek-sandrov and his school produced solutions to several classical problems of the theory of surfaces and found a significant application in the theory of differential equations and the theory of elastic films. Aleksandrov has also done research on the bases of philosophy and of the theory of relativity. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1942, the International Lobachevskii Prize in 1951, the Order of Lenin, and other orders and medals. Aleksandrov is also a master of sports in alpinism (1949).
