Clarke, Alexander Ross

Born Dec. 16, 1828, in Reading; died Feb. 11, 1914, in Reigate. English geodesist.

Clarke is known for his determination of the dimensions of the terrestrial ellipsoid in 1866 and 1880. The ellipsoid calculated in 1866 was accepted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The use of both earth ellipsoids derived by Clarke is not well founded, since their dimensions are not supported by modern investigations.
