Alisyahbana, Sutan Takdir
Born Feb. 11, 1908, in Natal. Indonesian writer and scientific philologist.
In 1933, Alisyahbana founded the independent literary journal Pujangga Baru. He is the author of the novels Amid Unending Misfortunes (1929), Inextinguishable Lamp (1932), and The Girl in the Outlaws’ Nest (1941) and the verse collection Torn Clouds (1935). His novel Unfurled Sails (1936), which deals with the struggle to emancipate Indonesian women, is especially well known.
