All-Union Geological Oil Exploration Institute (Vnigni)
a scientific research institute of the Ministry of Geology of the USSR, created in 1953 in Moscow. There is a Kama branch in Perm’ and a Georgian branch in Tbilisi, as well as composite laboratories located in Orenburg and Dushanbe.
The institute has six regional branches, and it has departments on the origin of oil and gas, reserves of oil and gas, testing and examination of wells, refining and prospecting of oil and gas deposits, and the economics of geological prospecting and exploring. Its scientific responsibility includes the substantiation of the main directions of geological prospecting for oil and gas in the USSR, prognostic evaluations of the territories of the USSR, and analysis of the condition of reserves of oil and gas, the origin of oil and gas, and the regularity of distribution of oil and gas deposits in the European USSR, Middle Asia, the Caucasus, and the Ukraine. Since 1954 the results of the institute’s researches have been published in Trudy.
