All-Union Geological Oil Exploration Institute (Vnigri)


a scientific research institute of the Ministry of Geology of the USSR, formed in 1929 in Leningrad. It has a Sakhalin section in the city of Okha.

The All-Union Geological Oil Exploration Institute is working on the theory of the formation of hydrocarbons in nature, studying the regularity of the formation and distribution of oil and gas deposits, and providing the scientific basis for the geological exploration work on oil and gas in the Baltic area, Siberia, the Far East, Kazakhstan, and the northern regions of the European part of the USSR. The results of its researches are published as monographs or as separate articles in Trudy VNIGRI (since 1945; from 1930 to 1945 it was called Trudy NIGRI).
