Amazar

 

an urban-type settlement in Mogocha Raion, Chita Oblast, RSFSR. Amazar is located in the eastern part of the oblast, near where the Bol’shaia Chichatka River flows into the Amazar, a tributary of the Amur. It has a railroad station on the Siberian Railway. Its population in 1968 was 3,700. There are a lumber industry and enterprises servicing rail transport.

river in Chita Oblast, RSFSR; left-hand tributary of the Amur River. The Amazar is 290 km long; its basin has an area of 11,100 sq km.

It is formed by the confluence of the Bol’shoi and Malyi Amazar rivers, which rise in the southeastern spurs of the Olekminskii Stanovik. The Amazar flows along the northern slopes of the Amazar Range, crosses it, and flows into the Amur below Shilka. It freezes over in October and opens up again at the end of April or the beginning of May. In summer there are flash floods. In winter for three to five months the river freezes over in places down to the bottom.
