The daughter of the late Samuel McDowell McNutt and Mary Linda Walton, she was born July 28, 1918 in Amelia County, VA. After graduating from Rice High School, she completed a secretarial program with financial assistance from her elder sister, the late Mary McNutt Gates and then worked for a time in the Accounts Receivable Department of the Westinghouse Hotel Supply company in Richmond, VA until moving to Southbridge, MA and joining American Optical Company.
For a while he worked in a bank, and then became a teacher, first in Amelia County, VA, and then for the rest of his career in Alexandria, a Virginia suburb of Washington.
