1939–, Norwegian stage and film actress, b. Japan. She is best known for her roles in nine films directed by Ingmar Bergman, e.g., Persona (1966), Shame (1968), Cries and Whispers (1972), and Autumn Sonata (1978).

 and came into her own as a mature actress; The Passion of Anna (1969); and Scenes from a Marriage (1974). She starred in Bergman's stage productions of Ibsen's Peer Gynt (1993) and Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale (1995). She also had a busy career in other directors' film, theater, and television productions. Fluent in English, she appeared in a number of American films, e.g., Duel at Diablo (1966), The Kremlin Letter (1970), and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977).
