White, Andrew

(1579–1656) missionary; born in London, England. A Jesuit theology professor who came under fire for political activities and for his rigidly Thomistic philosophy, he went to Maryland (1634) as head of a band of Jesuit missionaries and evangelized among the Indians, also writing an Algonquin grammar and catechism. He was expelled by Puritans and sent back in chains to England (1645), where he was forced to remain.
