Anthon, Charles

(1797–1867) classicist; born in New York City. He was admitted to the bar in 1919 and was made professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia University the next year. He was the first American to prepare critical editions of classical authors (Horatii Poemata, 1830). He did the first American edition of Lemprierè's Classical Dictionary, which he virtually rewrote; his contribution was recognized when the third edition (1833) was called Anthon's Classical Dictionary.
