That was Antiar, who proved himself the champion staying hurdler in the Spa (now World) Hurdle in 1965 when ridden by Dave Dick and trained by Peter Cazalet.
The Queen Mother: Antiar was her one festival winner
The Queen Mother also had good results from smart chasers like The Rip, winner of 13 races including the 1961 Grand Sefton Trial at Hurst Park and the 1965 Coventry (now Racing Post) Chase; another Lingfield specialist in Laffy, who also won the 1962 Ulster Harp National; Silver Dome, whose seven royal victories included the 1964 Becher Chase at Aintree; and Antiar, who became her only winner at the Cheltenham Festival when taking the Spa (now Stayers') Hurdle in 1965.
Her other two champions were Antiar and Black Magic, a headstrong, bold-jumping front-runner who was the best novice chaser of 1970/71, winning all five of his completed races in fine style, including the Scilly Isles Beginners' Chase.
Cheltenham Festival winner: Antiar (1965 Spa Hurdle - now Stayers' Hurdle)
Other Cheltenham Festival winners: Glenbeigh (1954 Broadway Novices' Chase), Mont Tremblant (1955 Mildmay of Flete Handicap Chase), Tokoroa (1957 Gloucestershire Hurdle, Div 1), Rose's Quarter (1957 Cathcart Chase), Winning Coin (1959 National Hunt Handicap Chase), Elan (1964 Gloucestershire Hurdle, Div 2), Antiar (1965 Spa Hurdle)
Dick's two winners at that Cheltenham Festival were Dunkirk and the Queen Mother's Antiar in the Spa (now Stayers') Hurdle, both of them trained by Peter Cazalet.
Though weight severely restricted his riding opportunities, he had a notable big-race strike rate and his outstanding winners included Mont Tremblant (Cheltenham Gold Cup), Pas Seul (Whitbread Gold Cup), Dunkirk (Champion Chase), Telegram, Tokoroa, Piperton and Antiar.
More than 30 years have passed since Antiar gave the Queen Mother her sole Festival success, but trainer Nicky Henderson's upbeat comments suggest jumping's most celebrated supporter could be receiving a trophy in addition to presenting one.
