Arioso

a solo vocal episode in an opera, oratorio, or cantata; generally shorter than an aria and written in a freer form. The declamatory manner of singing is often used. Examples are the ariosi of Canio (I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo) and Hermann and Lenskii (The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky).
