Skalbe, Arvids
(Arvīds Skalbe). Born Mar. 1, 1922, in Jaunlatgale, now Pytalovo, Pskov Oblast. Soviet Latvian poet.
Skalbe graduated from the pedagogical institute in Rezekne in 1941, taught school, and began working as a journalist in 1953. He began publishing in 1947. Skalbe wrote the poetry collections The Cranes Have Come (1956), Wild Apple Tree (1959), Poems (1963), and Father’s Silvery Path (1972). His restrained, concise poetry is stylistically akin to Latvian folklore.
