Ashford, Emmett

Ashford, Emmett (Littleton)

(1914–80) baseball umpire; born in Los Angeles. He became professional baseball's first black umpire in 1951 and major league's first black umpire in 1966. Known for his flamboyant calling of balls and strikes, he umpired American League games from 1966 to 1970.
