A high-speed packet-switching technology based on cell-oriented switching and multiplexing that uses 53-byte packets to transfer different types of information, such as voice, video, and data, over the same communications network at different speeds. Abbreviated ATM.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode

(ATM, or "fast packet") A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed-size packet (called a cell).
