This taxon was originally considered a member of the frenulate family Polybrachiidae (Southward, 1961), but Webb (1964b), mainly citing differences in the postannular region, argued that Sclerolinum could not be ascribed to either of the two orders (Thecanephria and Athecanephria) of siboglinids recognized at the time (vestimentiferans had not been discovered yet).
