Boma

(bō`mə), city (1984 pop. 197,617), Kongo Central prov., W Congo (Kinshasa), on the Congo River estuary. A port and railhead, it exports tropical timber, bananas, cacao, and palm products. Boma was the capital of the Congo Free State (after 1908 the Belgian Congo) from 1887 to 1926, when it was changed to Leopoldville (now Kinshasa).

Boma exports wood, oil palm products, bananas, cocoa, and rubber. The city has an airport. Other industries include the processing of agricultural raw materials, a brewery, ship repair, and fishing. In 1886, Boma was made the administrative center of the country; in 1926 the administrative center was moved to Léopoldville (now Kinshasa).
