Blankenburg

Blankenburg (blăngˈkənbo͝ork), Blankenburg am Harz (äm härts), or Bad Blankenburg (bätˈ), city, Saxony-Anhalt, E central Germany. It is a spa located at the northern foot of the Harz Mts. and is also known for its tree and seed nurseries, ironworks, and stone quarries. During his residence in Blankenburg (1837–45), the educator Friedrich Froebel founded the first kindergarten.

Blankenburg

 

(Blankenburg am Harz), a city in the German Democratic Republic, in Magdeburg district (Bezirk), on the north slope of the Harz. Population, 19,600 (1967). Blankenburg is a balneological health resort (with a mud-therapy clinic) and tourist center. Industry consists of cast-iron production, machine-building (for transport, sanitary equipment, gas appliances, and so on), and woodworking.

When the German educator Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel opened the first kindergarten in Bad Blankenburg, Germany, in 1840, he was thinking nice thoughts about children, wooden blocks, creative play and growing flowers.
Standing on a hill outside of Keilhau, now called Froebelblick, as he contemplated his new conceptual framework for a school for the very young child, Froebel coined the term "kindergarten." In 1839, he opened the first kindergarten in Bad Blankenburg. A man of many failures, at last he had found his life's most important work.
Nestled in the Thuringian countryside's hills and forests lie the Froebel destinations of Oberweissbach, Keilhau, Bad Blankenburg, and Schweina, all of which are near Eisenach, Germany.
