Though Raffles appeared unaware of Barros' interpretation of Jawi, he also understood it as 'the Malay term for anything mixed or crossed; as when the language of one country is written in the character of another, it is termed b'hasa jahui (bahasa jawi) ,or mixed language; or when a child is born of a Kiling father and Malay mother, it is called anah jahui [anak jawi], a child of mixed race'.
