Bakhmach

 

city and center of the Bakhmach Raion, Chernigov Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. A railroad junction, it has a population of 14,400 (1968). There is a combine for the production of canned dairy products and dried vegetables and a poultry combine. A factory for the production of chemical machinery has been under construction since 1970.

At the Battle of Bakhmach (see above) in the Ukraine the Czechs defeated the Central Power forces, assuring their control of the western terminus of the railroad.
At the Battle of Zborov (July l - 2, 1917) 3500 men of the Ceskoslovenske legie defeated a 5,500 man strong Austrian force, capturing 3,300 of them, and at the Battle of Bakhmach (July 8 - 13,1917) the Legion's 6th and 7th Rifle Regiments and its assault battalion defeated units of the German 91st and 224th Infantry divisions capturing a strategic railway junction.
