an urban-type settlement in Borzhomi Raion, Georgian SSR. It is located on the northern slopes of the Trialet Range at an elevation of 1,700 m. Bakuriani is the terminal point of a railroad branch extending 37 km from Borzhomi. In 1969 it had a population of 2,900. It is a mountain-forest climatic health resort. The summers are warm and temperate with a July temperature of about 14° C; the winters are mild with a January temperature of -6° C. Precipitation is about 800 mm annually. The main curative factors are the mountain climate and the great number of sunny days (1,975 hours a year). Children with diseases of the lymph nodes, secondary anemia, and nontubercular diseases of the respiratory organs are treated. There is a sanatorium which is open all year. There is an all-Union ski station and a fur-breeding sovkhoz (silver fox, mink, polar fox, and others). Andesite is mined near Bakuriani.
