town (1990 pop. 2,768), SE Maine, on Mount Desert IslandMount Desert Island, c.100 sq mi (260 sq km), largest island off the coast of Maine; separated from the mainland by Frenchman Bay, Mt. Desert Narrows, and Western Bay. The island's rugged topography is a result of glacial action.

Bar Harbor is a port of entry, and a port of call for cruise ships; from 1956 to 2009 a ferry connected the town with Yarmouth, N.S. In 1947 a large part of the town was destroyed by fire.
