Bîrlad

 

a city in eastern Rumania on the Bîrlad River, in Vaslui district. Population, 41,100 (1966). It is a railway station on the Iaşi-Galaţi line. Bîrlad is the commercial center of an agricultural region, with enterprises for processing raw agricultural products. A ball-bearing plant and a garment factory are located here, and there is a state theater.

(Podişul Bîrladului), a plateau in eastern Rumania; the middle part of the Moldavian highlands. Elevations to 564 m Composed of Neocene limestones, sandstones, and clays. Strongly dissected by a dense network of deeply incised rivers of the Prut, Siret, and Bîrlad basins; ravines are common. The interfluves are mostly flat. There are beech and oak forests. Livestock raising, horticulture, and viticulture are practiced.

Between the time of its founding in Iassy, in 1877 and the height of its influence even two years later, Comitetul Central al femeilor in frunte cu Maria Rosetti Roznovanu (The Central Committee Led by Maria Rosetti Roznovanu) became an umbrella organization for a multitude of social undertakings, including woman's suffrage, in many other towns as Falticeni, Piatra Neamt, Roman, Tecuci, and Barlad.
In Barlad (north-east), more than 3,500 people gathered to protest shale gas drilling plans by US giant Chevron.
The companies will exchange well data relating to the 2,403 square kilometre (sq km) Suceava gas concession and the 6,284sq km Barlad concession.
Some 1,000 people rallied in Barlad, a city in eastern Romania that is close to a 2,300-square-mile area where Chevron is planning to drill.
Chevron was granted earlier this year its first exploration license in Northeastern Romania, in the Barlad block.
Chevron wants to start drilling for shale gas exploration near the town of Barlad.
