Basicity

(in metallurgy), the ratio (in percent by weight) of basic and acidic oxides in iron ore materials (iron ore, sinter, and pellets), and also in blast-furnace and steel-smelting slag. Basicity defines the chemical composition and metallurgical properties of such materials. In the simplest case, basicity is defined as the ratio of CaO to SiO2 or of the total of CaO and MgO to that of SiO2 and Al2O3. The processing of iron ore materials requires the calculation of natural basicity and the basicity produced by the addition of flux. Basicity may vary from several tenths of a unit to 2–3.

Alternatively, other techniques include; use of different preparation methods to enhance the metal support interaction, use of bimetallic catalyst systems and addition/incorporation of metal and/or redox oxides as promoters to effect the acidity and/or basicity [13, 14].
