Belaia Rus’

 

the name of the Byelorussian lands up until the 18th century. The derivation of the name is unclear. It may have designated the western lands of Rus’ that were independent of both Tatar-Mongol and Lithuanian feudal lords in the 13th and 14th centuries. Later, this name came to apply to all the western lands of Rus’.
