Beslan

 

city and administrative center of Pravoberezhnyi Raion, Severnaia Osetiia ASSR. Located on the right bank of the Terek River, it is a railroad station on the Armavir-Baku line (a line runs from Beslan to Ordzhonikidze). Population, 26,000 (1968). There is a corn-processing combine (the largest in Europe) that turns corn into starch, syrup, glucose, oil, and dry feed. A hemp factory, a plant for rein-forced-concrete structural elements, an auto repair enterprise, a gravel and sleeper plant, and a dairy are also located there. Beslan was reorganized from a settlement into a city in 1950.
