Bestor, Arthur (Eugene, Jr.)

(1908–  ) educator, historian; born in Chautauqua, N.Y. During a long and varied academic career, he published influential works on American intellectual history (Backwoods Utopias, 1950; revised 1970); the "aimlessness" of progressive education in public schools (Educational Wastelands, 1953; The Restoration of Learning, 1955); and 18th-century American constitutional history.
