a game played with cards covered by rows of printed numbers. The aim of the game is for the players to cover the numbers on their cards that are called out by one of the players who reads them from special wooden chips. The winning player is the one who is the first to cover fully one or more rows of numbers on his card. Bingo first appeared in Genoa, Italy, in the 16th century where it was known as lotto. In 1521 the Venetian Senate banned bingo as a form of gambling. In Russia bingo has been known since the 18th century. Children’s bingo has pictures of animals and plants instead of numbers.
