gasification

[′gas·ə·fə′kā·shən]
(chemical engineering)
Any chemical or heat process used to convert a substance to a gas; coal is converted by the Hygas process to a gaseous fuel.
(mining engineering)
A method for exploiting poor-quality coal and thin coal seams by burning the coal in place to produce combustible gas which can be burned to generate power or processed into chemicals and fuels. Also known as underground gasification.

BAA has achieved this by working with the London Borough of Hillingdon and the Mayor to design a building that requires less energy, generates decentralised energy through on-site combined cooling heating and power (CCHP), and uses on-site renewable energy such as biomass gasification and photovoltaic solar panels.
The new building has been designed to be more environmentally-friendly and BAA said it will cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 40% compared to the buildings it will replace, due to lower energy requirements; the generation of decentralised energy through on-site combined cooling heating and power (CCHP); and the use of on-site renewable energy such as biomass gasification and photovoltaic solar panels.
