a plant genus of the family Polygalaceae. Members are perennial, rarely annual, grasses and semishrubs with alternate leaves. The irregular flowers grow in racemes. Approximately 600 species exist, found almost all over the world. There are approximately 30 species in the Soviet Union; Polygala vulgaris and P. amarella, which grow in damp meadows, and P. comosa, which grows in dry meadows, are common in the European part.
