Indisputably inspired by the Incredible Hulk, DC Comics' Blockbuster was a thickset, thickheaded juggernaut who pulverized Batman on several occasions. Debuting in Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino's “The Blockbuster Invasion of Gotham City” in Detective Comics #345 (1965), young scientist Mark Desmond chemically boosts his feeble form, transforming into Blockbuster … with his sagacity taking a beating. Manipulated into thievery by his shifty brother Roland, Blockbuster's destructive fury can only be quelled by the face of Bruce Wayne— who once saved Mark from drowning—forcing Batman remove his mask to reveal his Wayne identity to calm the rampaging brute. In later tales, Blockbuster went head-to-head with Solomon Grundy and broke bread with the Secret Society of Super-Villains before being drafted into the Suicide Squad, where he perished fighting Brimstone. Sibling Roland Desmond hoisted the Blockbuster mantle in Starman vol. 1 #9 (1989), pumping up from a super-steroid but, unlike Mark, maintaining his intellect. Blockbuster II strong-armed the underworld in the city of Blüdhaven, developing bitter rivalries with its resident guardian Nightwing and the superhero information broker Oracle. A deal with the demon Neron augmented Blockbuster's brainpower, and the gargantuan genius planned to expand his crime empire into his former digs of Gotham when a bullet fired by anti-hero Tarantula brought an end to his life and to the lethal legacy of the Blockbuster brothers. Yet Blockbuster barrels on, in television's Justice League Unlimited (2004–present), voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
