For any given block of ore, the specific energy required of the ball mill circuit is determined using Bond's third theory of comminution (which is based on Bond's "standard ball mill circuit" comprising a 2.44 m diameter wet overflow ball mill, fed by a rod mill, and in closed circuit with cyclones):
