book louse[′bu̇k ‚lau̇s]
(Troctes divinatorius), an insect of the order Corrodentia. The body, approximately 1 mm long, is pale yellow or white; there are no wings. The book louse is widespread and feeds on plant and animal residue. It frequently lives in houses and can be found in old books—hence the name. It can damage herbaria and insect collections.
