Bournemouth
a city (county borough) in Great Britain, in the county of Hampshire on the English Channel, with a population of 151,500 (1968). There are metalworking, electrotechnical, and pharmaceutical enterprises. Bournemouth is a large seaside health resort—the English Riviera. The climate is even, with small temperature variations over the year. The average annual temperature is 11.5° C. The winters are mild with average January temperatures of 6° C as are the summers, which have average July temperatures of 16.2° C. Annual precipitation is about 750 mm. Therapeutic remedies include sea bathing and baths and aero-heliotherapy. Bournemouth is well known for its fine-sand beaches extending almost 10 km and attractive boardwalk equipped for terrainkuhr (walking therapy). There are many parks totaling about 600 hectares. Sports facilities include indoor pools and artificial skating rinks, yacht clubs, and tennis courts. Persons suffering from anemia, nontubercular diseases of the respiratory organs, and functional disorders of the nervous system are treated here.
