Box Set

theatrical scenery on a frame, depicting an interior.

Box sets were used for the first time in 1794 by the German actor and director F. L. Schröder. They became especially widespread with the development of the “psychological drama and the drama of daily life,” which required an intimate, indoor setting for its stage realization.
