Bracelet

an ornament worn on the arm; common throughout the world. The most ancient bracelet, which was made from mammoth tusks, dates back to the Paleolithic period. At the end of the Neolithic period, stone bracelets made by drilling appeared. Metal bracelets became common in the Bronze Age. The bracelets of the Greeks and Romans were particularly elegant and were sometimes decorated with tiny sculptures. During the Middle Ages in Western Europe, the bracelet almost disappeared from fashion because of the long sleeves on women’s clothes. Beginning with the Renaissance, at the same time that short sleeves came into style, the bracelet became popular in Western Europe. In Rus’ in the 11th—13th centuries, bracelets (called obruchy, or hoops) were common; they were made of gold or nielloed silver for noblewomen, glass for city women, and copper for peasant women.
