Included in this public database are a number of marine invertebrates: the ascidians, Ciona intestinalis (684,319 ESTs), Halocynthia roretzi (4192 ESTs) and Polyandrocarpa misakiensis (465 ESTs), the lancelet Branchiostoma floridae (277,538), the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (130,988 ESTs), the oyster Crassostrea virginica (9018 ESTs) and the prawn Penaeus monodon (1611 ESTs) (dbEST release July 22, 2005).
Currently, 32 lancelet species are recognized: 24 in the genus Branchiostoma, 7 in the genus Asymmetron, and 1 in the genus Epigonichthys (Poss and Boschung, 1996; Nishikawa, 2004; Zhang et al., 2006; Kon et al., 2006, 2007).
Searches based on domain organization were used to identify genes encoding usherin-like proteins in the genomes of chordates (including the tunicate Ciona savignyi and the lancelet Branchiostoma floridae), the echinoderm Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, as well as in the limpet Lottia gigantea and the polychaete Capitella (Table 1).
In the head region of common lancelets Branchiostoma, the peripheral nerves show a metameric pattern similar to that of the cranial nerves in vertebrates; in addition, they show specific asymmetric innervation patterns (Franz, 1923; Kaji et al., 2001).
Sequence alignments (tBlastn) using homeodomains of proteins belonging to NK2, NK3, NK4, NK5, NK6, NK7, Msx, Hex, and Tlx families were derived from Lottia gigantea, Branchiostoma floridae, and Ciona intestinalis genome contigs available at http://genome.jgi-psf.org/ and from Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster genomes at WormBase (http://www.wormbase.org/) and FlyBase (http://www.flybase.org/), respectively.
