an island in the Malay Archipelago, in the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia. Area, 8, 800 sq km. Population, about 30, 000 (1957). The mountains, which consist chiefly of Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, rise to an altitude of 2, 429 m. Buru has humid tropical evergreen forests. Its exports in-clude valuable wood, copra, and spices. Namlea is the main city.
