bypass valve

[′bī‚pas ‚valv]
(engineering)
A valve that opens to direct fluid elsewhere when a pressure limit is exceeded.

bypass valve

A valve (usually in a closed position) which is used as the control device in a bypass.

A valve that maintains constant system pressure. When the system pressure is exceeded by a predetermined amount, the valve opens and relieves the pressure, bypassing the fluid back to the system and thereby protecting the system against ruptures. The pressure at which the valve should open can be set. Bypass valves are commonly used in oil filters and oil coolers. Also known as a bypass relief valve.

The bypass valve is controlled by the force balance between the fluid pressure and spring forces.
The conventional power regulation methods for closed Brayton cycle are also illustrated in the figure: the reactor outlet temperature control (ROT), the inventory control (INV), and bypass valve control (BPV).
Ideal bypass flow control is achieved with a dedicated, actuated two-way bypass valve controlled to eliminate bypass flow when end uses require more than the minimum flow constraint and to allow minimum bypass flow when end uses require less than the minimum flow constraint (Avery and Richel 2009).
the Map strategy of power turbine bypass valve for optimum overall efficiency can be described as shown in Fig.
A pumping system with a performance curve (e.g., progressing cavity pumps) would amplify pressure variations caused by the switching bypass valve and complicate the measurements.
Another useful exercise is to look at bypass valve position for vane 2, 3 and 4 cooling flows.

As a principal rule each stage should be controlled with one bypass valve which is independent of other bypass valves.
OPENING THE SEAT ACTUATOR BYPASS VALVE ALSO HELPS PROTECT THE BURST DISC.
Taylor, P.E., in Figure 5 on the chilled water side of the heat exchanger, I suggest a bypass valve be added at the primary chilled water pump suction side (between chiller return and supply lines), so that during full economizer (no mechanical cooling needed), chilled water return doesn't have to be pumped through chiller evaporators after leaving the heat exchanger.
