Phenylethyl Alcohol

 

(also beta-phenylethyl alcohol, 2-phenylethyl alcohol), C6H5CH2OH, a colorless liquid with the odor of roses that is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol and ether. The boiling point is 220°–222°C, and the density 1.02 g/cm3 (20°C). Phenylethyl alcohol is a component of rose oil (up to 80 percent) and certain other essential oils. In industry, the compound is synthesized by, among other methods, the Friedel-Crafts reaction using benzene and ethylene oxide. Phenylethyl alcohol is used as an odoriferous substance in the manufacture of perfumes.
