a department in central France. Area, 7,800 sq km. Population, 316,000 (1975). The capital of Cher is Bourges. Industry employs 32 percent of the economically active population, and agriculture 32 percent (1968). The department’s agriculture is diversified. Industry includes agricultural machine building, aircraft construction, food processing, and the production of glass and ceramic ware. The main industrial centers of Cher are Bourges and Vierzon.
