Cobán

 

a city in Guatemala; the administrative center of the department of Alta Verapaz. The city is located in the Cobán River valley at an elevation of over 1,300 m. Population, 46,700 (1970). It is the trading center for the surrounding agricultural region (mostly coffee). The city is noted for its handicrafts. Coban was founded in 1538.
