a city in central Turkey; administrative center of Kayseri Vilayet. Population, 168, 000 (1970). Railroad station and highway junction; it is a very important industrial and trade center. The city has the largest cotton-textile combine in Turkey (constructed in 1934–35 with economic and technical aid fromthe USSR). The city has flour-milling, sugar, meat and dairy, and wood-products industries, as well as an aircraft assembly factory. Kayseri is one of the country’s main rug-weaving centers.
