Canoas
a city in southern Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Population, 122, 000 (1968). Canoas has a railroad station and is a highway junction. Building materials (glass, cement) are produced in Canoas, which also has metallurgical, transportation machine-building, electrotechnical, chemical, furniture, pulp and paper, and slaughtering-refrigerating industries.
Nearby is an oil-refining plant (of the state-owned Petrobrazcompany).
