, river, c.1,750 mi (2,815 km) long, rising as the Caquetá in the Andes, SW Colombia. It flows SE into Brazil, where it is called the Japurá, and enters the Amazon through a network of channels. It is navigable by small boats in Brazil.

Area of study: The study was carried out in the southeastern region of the Republic of Colombia, in the department of Caqueta (1[degrees]37' N & 75[degrees]36' W), in the municipalities of Florencia (1[degrees]36' N & 75[degrees]36' W), Morelia (1[degrees]29' N & 75[degrees]43' W), Belen de los Andaquies (1[degrees]24'5 N & 75[degrees]52' W) and San Vicente del Caguan (2[degrees]06' N & 74[degrees]46' W).
The bottom five departments were Narino, Meta, Caqueta, Choco, and Norte de Santander.
